>Rain and a real post

>It’s a rainy, windy day, and the temp has risen one degree since last night. It’s 61 degrees Fahrenheit. Blanket, sweater, long sleeves. North wind blowing the curtains and pushing the rain against the window. Oh, yeah. This makes me very happy.

Now for a real post, not one with videos or memes. *smile*

I am troubled. I am still circling the drain here. But it’s like there are two of me. One is the happy, ready for fun, laughing at The Glades me. The one who is happy. Then there is the other me. The one who is circling the black hole. The one who wakes up sad and in pain and who feels like crying all the time. I don’t know how I got here. This is what bothers me. There’s no reason for this, I can’t seem to shake it…it’s always there underneath everything…I keep getting tiny flashback memories where I’m there in the moment and I respond out loud. “I didn’t mean…, Why did you…” then in mid sentence I realize I’m having a non-existent conversation with no one. I talk to myself all the time anyway, but this is different. I am talking to someone who is only there in my head, as if I’m there in that moment. It’s kind of worrying. Okay. Now that I’ve put it out there, I feel better. We’ll see how long that lasts.

>Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

>Video below. Why have I become so interested in gay rights, I ask myself. I’ve always believed that discrimination is wrong, denial of equal rights is wrong, but I’ve never been outspoken about it. Til Torchwood. Torchwood made me care enough to post the things I’ve posted. Seasons one and two presented a world very different than the one we live in. A world where it didn’t matter to anyone who you loved or who you shagged. (Not being British, ‘shagged’ and variations of the word always make me laugh. Yes, I am sick.) Up until COE, when the homophobia emerged, fueled I think by the self-hatred or hubris of RTD. I’m not sure which. Anyway, it seems to me that people should stand up for what is right. Not what is religiously correct, or what is politically correct, but what is just common-sensibly right. (Hey, did I make up a new word?) The cost to ourselves from our own prejudices is enormous, and unfortunately a lot of us cannot see that. Here’s an example:

>Stand Up and Be Counted for What’s Right!

>Hi, dear readers

The Minneapolis-based retailer Target just gave over $150,000 to buy ads supporting state Rep. Tom Emmer, a far-right Republican candidate for governor. This makes Target one of the very first companies to take advantage of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision allowing unlimited corporate cash in elections.

Target must think customers won’t care. They’re wrong: We do care, and we need to let them know that we want Target — and all corporations — out of our elections. Can you join me in sending a message to Target’s CEO at the link below?

I challenge you to not buy anything made in China. Almost impossible, isn’t it? Even if you think you are buying from an American company, once you read the labels carefully, you’ll find at least part of what you bought was made in China. My new fireplace thingy, for example, comes from a Texas company. You’d think they make their furniture themselves. Nope. The fine print on the papers that came with it say Made in China. So the Texas company is an import company, not a furniture company at all. Stuff like this just makes me cringe. No wonder I circle the black hole. Humanity never ceases to disappoint me. Individually I like people. Really, I do. But my species in general, not so much.

Oh, hell. These guys look too happy to leave off this post.

How could gay marriage be wrong when it makes someone this happy? These are our brothers, people.

Update: Brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, mothers, fathers…all are entitled to the same rights.

Political Spectrum Quiz

>May I Introduce

>The new senator from Massachusetts, ladies and gentlemen:

http://www.cosmopolitan.com/celebrity/news/scott-brown-nude-in-cosmo

AND a little something of interest here:

>Depression

>I haz it. Scott Brown won the election. His will be the vote that takes down the dream of his predecessor in the Senate, Ted Kennedy. He wanted the seat to destroy what Kennedy worked so hard for, and not enough of us who support health care reform got out and did their civic duty. This is what always happens. People think it doesn’t make a difference if they vote, but it does. So we will get what we deserve. We didn’t learn from those eight years? Apparently not. I saw an ad that said how close we are to having Washington decide our health care. Who do they think decides it now? Drug companies and HMO’s, that’s who. We are a stupid lot in this country. It’s just too darn bad.

>Voting

>I posted this in reply to a comment in a group I belong to, and I thought the subject important enough to repost here. Yes, it political, people, but politics really do matter to all of us.

“But if you vote for the independent, it takes votes away from Martha, and Scott wins. Remember this happened when Ralph Nader ran. The election went a way it might not have gone otherwise. Who wins matters. A certain interest group has hijacked the government, mainly because people who don’t share their philosophy don’t get out and vote, and people who do, do. So they got in and look where it took us. Yes, people, I am one of those left-wing liberal tree-huggers, and proud of it. Way back in the early 90’s, PBS did a show about Ralph Reed and his group. He later became a close advisor to Bush the Second. It struck me, watching the show, that A. he was scary, and B. just a little more fanaticism on his part, and he could start a Jihad of his own against those of us who don’t share his views. And in a way, he did. We have devolved into a country where if those of us on one side don’t like what those of us on the other side say, they don’t just disagree with us, they hate us. Now we have Rush and Glenn and Bill O’ spewing hate every day in every way. I personally find this very, very scary. We worry about certain factions of the Muslim faith, but we should also worry about certain factions of the Christian faith, who apparently have no idea or just don’t care what Jesus actually taught. Don’t mean to start something here, but this really matters, people. Really. What kind of America do you want your children to live in?”

>It Was A Sucky Day

>
My computer is still acting up and I cannot figure it out. Getting frustrated. Has anyone ever done a re-install? It’s all pretty backed up on MozyHome and XMarks, so I think I could do it, just not sure if it’s wise. I’d want to update the drivers and then just reinstall stuff I know I will really use. Sheldon just did it on The Big Bang Theory, and it took a very long time. Long enough for him to try to learn the Finnish language. I like The Big Bang Theory. I can get on-line without the desktop, but just not sure if I should attempt this or not.

The second sucky thing is the comments made by two complete and total fuck-ups about the horrific earthquake in Haiti. Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh. Two people I would not ever think of listening to, but they do get themselves onto Keith Olbemann and Rachel Maddow, The Daily Show and the Colbert Report, all of which I do check out. Disgraceful comments by two hate-filled right-wing bigots. They make me ashamed.

The last is that a bad thing happened to someone I love, and I am very upset by it and by the fact that there is really nothing I can do to help or make it better. I can just sit here and think evil thoughts about the person who did it. People can be such complete and utter shits. These three really do suck and it really is sad.

>Veteran’s Day

>It’s Veteran’s Day here in the United States. How fortunate we are to have men and women willing to go off and fight and sometimes die to keep us free. Unfortunately, a lot of us use that freedom to discriminate against gays, people of color, people of religions other than the particular one we cling to. They forget that wars are fought and people die so ALL of us can be free, not just the ones who look, act, and believe as we do. Free means we all have the same rights under the law. ALL of us.

Veterans of all wars deserve our utmost respect, and all the benefits and help we can provide when needed. I’ve known some veterans in my life. My father, who came home with a life-long injury, my father-in-law, my brother-in-law who came home a drug addict, my high-school friend who came home from Viet Nam with no legs, my husband’s best friend and best man at our wedding who came home from Nam in a body bag. For them, I choose not to discriminate, not to judge, not to live as though my way were the only way and anyone who doesn’t agree does not deserve to have the same protections of the law that I do. I choose freedom and equal rights for every human. I hope you will, too.

>The sleep thing is acting up again. I didn’t sleep well most of last week, then Thursday slept very late and since I had to be up and dressed by noon Friday, it was easier to just stay up all night. Last night, I went to bed about 2am and slept til 5pm. This is the sometimes pattern. Up all one night, sleep way too many hours next night. I’m having a lot of pain again, too. I think it’s the result of moving things around and going out a couple of times, so maybe it will get better again.

I am kind of discouraged by all the negative reporting and comment about Obama. He’s only been in for a month, I think people could hold off calling him a failed president just a tad longer. It also irks me that the people who stood by and let us get into this mess are now criticizing him for trying to fix it. Partisanship lives, to the detriment of all of us. It’s too bad.

Days are longer and brighter now, but it’s still pretty chilly, and I think we’re in for some more snow today. Everyone keeps saying it’s been such a long winter, but it’s only February, and winter is as long or short as it ever was. It snows in winter. It’s cold in winter. That’s what winter is. Get over it. Besides, I like snow. So there.

Gertrude the Timid has gotten a lot more playful lately. She loves the fish on a pole that I dangle for her to bat. Where Simon would play for ten minutes or so, she can play with that for an hour or more, depending on how long it takes for my arm to fall off. I can type with one hand and dangle with the other, so computing and playtime coincide well. She is a good cat, but I still miss my Simon. One thing she does that seems weird to me is she’ll look directly into my eyes for quite a long period. Usually I’m the one who looks away first, because I’ve read that animals don’t like you to look into their eyes, but I’m not sure that’s the case. At least not with her.

I like my new homemaker. She is funny and seems to do a good job cleaning, even doing a little extra that isn’t on her job description. I hope it works out. Sometimes they start out well and then gradually start slacking off over time.

I’ve forgotten how many eps are left of Galactica. I want it to be over, so I know the outcome, but I don’t want it not to be on anymore. It’s such a good show.
I’ve read books like that. I can’t wait to finish so I know what happens, but then when I’m done, I wish there was more of it to read.

I’ve been up since 5 yesterday evening, and now it’s nearly 7am and I think I could go to sleep but then I’d sleep all day again and be up all night again. I wish I could get in sync with Mother Nature. I don’t think people are meant to be nocturnal animals. *smile*

>My Quiet Day

>Having a quiet day reading blogs and cooking Oven Stew, which I figured out I haven’t made in about fifteen years. Time does fly, whether you’re having fun or not. I did go out today, to the post office and across the street for wine and cash. Yes, they sell cash at Tedeschi’s. No they don’t. But they do have an ATM.

Another great Galactica last night. I feel sorry for anyone who hasn’t followed this show. It is not only dark and intense, it is topical. Lots of comparisons to the world we have been living in for the past eight years. But Felix. Is he angry because of being put off from seeing the doctor, or is that just a last straw due to what happened in the webisodes? What if you didn’t see the webisodes? What if you didn’t know there were webisodes? Is that fair? I love a show that makes you think, though. How would you react in these or those circumstances? Why didn’t we do something about

UPDATE: I WAS having a quiet day, and then my computer went haywire. Lots of those beeps that never tell you why they are beeping or what to do about it, so hard shutdown and unplug were the order of the day. Working fine now, but this blog is a little screwed up. I was typing the first section when the beeps went off, so do I know what the problem was/is? Well, of course not. Will try to fix it, though. I am a good fixer. My point above, before I was so rudely cut off, was why didn’t we do something about what was going on during the last admin? Why did we let them get away with torture? Kara seemed to really enjoy torturing Leoben in Galactica. Why did we allow them to take away our freedoms in the name of fear? Are we really a nation of sheep, as a famous book once posited? Maybe we are. It’s a shame, really.

MORE UPDATE: I fixed it. Yay, me.

>OBAMA

>What a speech! What.A.Speech!
It was so inspirational, and at the same time touched on everything that was wrong with the previous administration. Much more politely than I could/would have. But he really told it like it is, I thought. I hope everyone either saw it or gets to see it. I am so proud to be a part of this America.
